Becoming a Referee

We are always looking for intramural  and BAYS referees.  It is a great way to contribute to Newton Soccer, be involved with soccer, and make some money.

The IM referee program is available to Newton 6th through 8th graders only.  The BAYS referee program is available to anyone 14 years or older and 8th grade or older.

Intramural Referees

There is a pre-season Intramural training program in the fall for incoming 6th, 7th and 8th graders. This is a one-time mandatory event. If you would like to referee games this fall or spring, you must attend this session. No previous referee experience is necessary. You will be assigned to games appropriate to your age and experience. This will improve your understanding of the game, it is fun and you get PAID! Please talk to your friends to join the orientation as well!

IM Referee Workshop

In order to referee in the Fall of 2024 or the Spring of 2025, you must attend the IM referee orientation event:

All new referees are required to attend a one-time referee orientation and training.  There are two date options to choose from and a rain date if needed.  If you do not attend the training, you can not referee in the 2024-2025 soccer year, no exceptions.  The orientation will cover two topics:  The first part will be a training on the rules of refereeing.  The second part will cover administrative logistics such as how to sign up for games and how to get paid.  You MUST attend both sections to become a NYS referee.

As an option, the second part of the orientation (covering administrative/logistics ONLY) will also be offered over zoom on August 28th at 5pm on for those finding that more convenient.  If you attend that zoom training, you must still attend one of the in-person trainings on the field, however you would be able to leave the in person orientation early, as soon as the training is complete.
